  • Characters side-step around each other in a dance that takes a bit too long to resolve itself in the fourth installment of the Seasonal Drama Series by Director Yoon Suk Ho in Spring Waltz.

On the run from debts accumulated by his gambling father, Lee Son-ho finds himself in hiding on a remote island. His father leaves him in the care of an old classmate and her daughter Eun-young. Angered by being seemingly abandoned by his father (yet again) he at first rejects innocent Eun-young's friendship but then realizes that she's the only friend he's got. He then starts to enjoy the stability of his life and his friendship with Eun-young grows. However, like all Korean dramas, tragedy strikes and the pair are separated.

Fifteen years later, Eun-young (HAN Hyo Joo) is the winner of an art competition that flies her to Austria to visit the Crystal Museum. There she meets Chae-ha (SEO Do-young), a talented pianist with a very cold personality. Chae-ha is obviously a troubled man wrestling with unknown demons from his past that his old childhood friend Ina (LEE So-yeon) wonders and worries about. She feels that he is not the same Chae-ha she knew and loved when they were kids.

On a whole, the drama isn't bad. It's not mediocre nor is it fantastic. Performances by all its characters are decent and the story itself isn't incredibly far-fetched. It's a kind of middle of the road fare that is good but not that exciting. It's a sort of disappointing ending to a series that had garnered so much attention over the last couple of years.

When Spring Waltz first, aired the ratings were not as Director Yoon Suk Ho was hoping for - so before its rebroadcast and this particular DVD release, he re-edited the drama for an international audience hoping to tighten the story's pacing. This resulted in a director's cut shorter than the original and what is presented in this DVD release.

YA Entertainment releases Spring Waltz in Wide Screen presentation on 7 DVDs. Special features include 49 minutes of Behind the Scenes footage of shooting the drama mainly focusing on the talent of the two children portraying Son-ho and Eun-young, as well as Interviews with the Cast and Crew all fully subtitled in English.
